Kyushu University established the “Kyushu University Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies (Q-AOS)” in April 2019 with the aim of promoting interdisciplinary and field-integrated research and education activities related to Asia and Oceania as a university-wide initiative.
By tackling social issues in Asian and Oceanian countries with all the Kyushu University, the Institute will contribute to resolution of these issues through both solutions to the problems of today and prediction of the issues expected to be faced tomorrow. Furthermore, we will essentially contribute to resolution of SDGs and Future SDGs.

As a large group that develops research and education activities at the Institute, we are promoting activities centered on Six Clusters: Resource Recycling, Sustainable Environment, Urban Studies, Medicine and Health, Security and Disaster Prevention, and Cultural Variation.

The kick-off symposium entitled “Exploring Futures from Asia and Oceania” was held on July 10, 2019. Also kick-off events took place by each cluster before/after the symposium. In these events, there were lively discussions and exchanges crossing the boundaries of academic fields.

This year, for the second time as Q-AOS symposium, entitled ” Living with Infectious Diseases: What Is a Sustainable Society Learned from COVID-19?” will be held from September 2(Wed) to September 3(Thu), 2020. We will hold keynote speeches, breakout sessions, international teleconferences, and panel discussions organized by young researchers.

Not just the COVID-19, but “Infectious Diseases” have threatened humanity in its history. In this situation, the symposium might be an opportunity to think about the “Sustainable Society” that the Institute for Asian and Oceanic Studies has as its philosophy.
